The Next Marriage Expansion

October 1, 2005 |

It started with civil unions. Now that the wave of homosexual marriages has gained worldwide momentum, a new scenario has emerged (did we really expect it to end?). The possibilities are now endless to what can happen in the name of true happiness. In the Netherlands, Victor just married two bi-sexual women. What were his words on the event?

Victor: ???A marriage between three persons is not possible in the Netherlands, but a civil union is. We went to the notary in our marriage costume and exchanged rings. We consider this to be just an ordinary marriage.???

What can we say but watch it to come in the future to a nation near you. I agree with Say Anything Blog on this topic. Once the box is open just about any combination people come up with is fair game. How can you ‘discriminate’ against one while tolerating other possibilities.

My only puzzlement… is which church in America will be the first to back these newest marriage creations?

    Mark:

Thanks for the comment on my blog.

I’d have to vote for either the UCC or the United Methodist’s for this one. Picking between the two is a little difficult though. But, those united people love to unite others.

Hmmm, who will be the first to apologize to the mormons for forbidding them entry into the union until they prohibited polygamy.

[…] Wondered how long before more news on the “Next Marriage Expansion” would come out! Not too long so it seems. Donner, a Catholic and a member of the largest Dutch party, the Christian-Democrat CDA (44 seats), said that such samenlevingscontracten are not illegal because the polygamy prohibition only applies to people that are formally married. I fail to see the connection between gay marriage and polygamy. The official union of two people, regardless of gender, is a completely different matter than polygamy, and should be treated as such. It was not so long ago that people of different races were forbidden to marry. Did the legalization of biracial marriage also lead to the degradation of the instution as you claim this law has done? What does the current high divorce rate tell us? Are heterosexual marriages really above reproach? Is it really the gay marriages we should be fighting, or the irresponsible ones? If the relationship between a person and his/her spouse is so easily marred by the actions of a totally unrelated couple, that marriage is the one i consider weak.

The only connection is the variation from one man, one woman marriage. Though polygamy is not new the emphasis of the new trio is not that he married two women. Rather he married two-bisexual women. It carries flavor of a lesbian marriage plus a guy thrown in for interest.

As for bi-ethnic marriage issue, the only issues are cultural. Because all people come from one blood (Adam & Eve), there really are not seperate ‘races’ but one blood.

The fact that many marriages are weak doesn’t mean we expand marriage but rather help people deal with the issues in the context of one man, one woman.

What about marriage between a Christian and an atheist? A Muslim and a Hindu? Wouldn’t your God, as you have alluded to him, disapprove of this also? If spirituality and religion are so important, should this also be illegal? There are surely many people that you or I would have no interest in marrying, not because of their gender, but because of other personality/lifestyle choices. What makes this certain choice so different? Love is sacred in all forms. The last thing we need is to condemn it.

[…] Strange how such things are the centerpiece of some ‘religious’ belief systems. The judge wants more wives now so he can have an exalted position in the next life. The jihadist muslim wants to blow up people so that he can obtain 70+ virgins in the afterlife. Either way, the judge will have to adhere to the laws of the land in the end. The debate and fight to legalize Polygamy has just begun. Many will continue to argue that polygamy poses no real threat to society. With the weakening of marriages, especially among Christians it should surprise no one that an easy case can be made that the real problem is weak marriages. With the under pinnings of the Christian-Judeo beliefs being removed we have only seen a long conversation in society as to what will now be acceptable. How far the marriage expansion continues depends on whether if it is too late for Christians to still influence the culture. […]
