Buried in a Fish

June 9, 2006 |

How do you want to be buried when you die? The usual wood coffin… a well painted metal one? I have also seen nice specialty coffins for the military. Very nice indeed.

But how about something completely different? Perhaps a coffin that looks like a coke bottle or an airplane? Perhaps for the Christian you could be buried in a fish. Fantasy coffins seem to be a hit in Ghana. Perhaps someone here needs to meet that new market and sell shares. We have custom everything… except these coffins.

Carpenters carry a coffin shaped in the form of a fish over the main road in Teshie, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital of Accra, January 22, 2004. Funerals are important social occasions in this West African country and elaborate, brightly coloured coffins have become an art form.

Welcome to the future of the burial market in the US… you think?

The day before his mother’s funeral, Donald Rockson had a last-minute change of heart about her bible-shaped coffin.

He had wanted the coffin to reflect his mother’s position as a devout churchgoer in this suburb of Accra, Ghana’s capital.

I just wonder if she knew about the changes? Some how I don’t think that it was a concern for the mother.

So the question is: Would you want a fantasy coffin and if so… what would it be?

Well, I like the idea of a fish. Any other symbol of the Christian faith that I can think of is inappropriately shaped for a coffin.
